Google’s AI answers are becoming the front door to your business

TechCrunch AI 28 July 2026

PLUS: If customers find suppliers through search, your old SEO habits may not be enough

How this applies to you

This shows up when someone searches for a service you offer and never reaches your homepage. It affects your FAQs, service pages, reviews, case studies, and local proof. If your website is vague, AI search may explain the category without naming you. If your content is specific, useful, and well-structured, you give yourself a better chance of being part of the answer.

New data says Google’s AI Overviews now appear in 43% of searches. That means more people are getting an answer before they click through to a website.

Search is moving from a list of links to a layer of answers. For a busy owner, that changes the job of your website. It is no longer just there to look credible when someone arrives. It also has to explain your business clearly enough that machines can understand when to mention you.

This does not mean chasing every AI search trick. It means going back to basics. What do you do? Who is it for? Where do you do it? What problems do you solve? What does a good job look like? What should a customer know before they choose?

The businesses that may benefit are the ones with plain, useful information. Specific service pages. Clear location coverage. Real examples. Pricing guidance where possible. Questions answered in the language customers actually use. Not keyword stuffing. Not thin blog posts written to impress an algorithm.

The trade-off is that measurement gets messier. A customer may see your name in an AI answer, ask a follow-up question, then call later. Your analytics may not show the full path. So you need stronger basics: ask new enquiries how they found you, keep your Google Business Profile tidy, and make sure the same facts appear consistently across your site and listings.

What not to do: do not panic-rewrite everything for AI. Do not publish generic explainers that could belong to anyone. Do not let a tool invent claims, locations, accreditations, or case studies. AI search rewards clarity, but customers still punish nonsense.

A useful next step is to audit one important service page as if it had to brief a new member of staff. If they could answer a customer’s first five questions from that page, you are probably moving in the right direction.

Task: Act as a practical website auditor for a UK small business. Review the service page text I paste below and tell me whether it is clear enough for both customers and AI search answers. Check for: what we do, who we help, location, proof, common questions, risks or missing facts, and any vague claims. Then rewrite the page outline in plain British English without hype. Why it matters. If customers find suppliers through search, your old SEO habits may not be enough. You need to be clear enough for AI answer systems to understand, cite, and recommend you.
