Perplexity has expanded Personal Computer to Windows. The tool turns a Windows machine into a local AI agent workspace that can work across apps, files, and browser tasks, instead of only answering questions in a chat box.
This is the kind of AI shift that small businesses should watch carefully, but not rush into blindly.
Most AI tools still ask you to leave your work, paste context into a chat box, then carry the answer back into your real system. Local agent tools point in the other direction. The assistant sits closer to the work itself. It can read what is on the machine, move between apps, and help with tasks that live across files, tabs, and messages.
For an owner or operator, that could be useful. Think about the end of a long day: quotes half written, supplier emails unanswered, a spreadsheet that needs checking, and notes from a call still sitting in rough form. A local agent could help turn that pile into next actions.
The trade-off is control. A tool that can work across your computer is more useful than a chatbot, but it also needs tighter boundaries. You would not give a new member of staff full access to every folder, account, and customer record on day one. The same rule applies here.
The sensible move is to start with low risk workflows. Let an agent summarise meeting notes, prepare a draft reply, compare two documents, or turn a messy folder into a clean checklist. Keep invoices, customer data, payments, legal documents, and account settings behind approval until you have tested the tool properly.
Do not start by asking it to "run the business". Start by asking where time leaks out of your day. Then test one small task where the cost of a mistake is low and the saving is obvious.
